VILLAGE PEOPLE: "MACHO MAN"/"I AM WHAT I AM" [12" LP MEDLEY] (1978)

If you were around in the late 1970's disco era, you'd probably remember Casablanca Records was THE "party" label.  After KISS saved Casablanca from going belly-up with 1975's beyond successful double-live LP KISS Alive!, the label signed on more artists, like Village People, Cher, and around 1980, The Captain and Tennille LOL!!  Donna Summer was already signed onto Casablanca before KISS Alive! was a hit, releasing her controversial Love To Love You Baby in 1975 as well.

"Macho Man" by Village People has been parodied and mostly used for camp humor almost ever since it was released.  But like some of Donna Summer's Casablanca LP's, VP's Macho Man LP from 1978 starts off with the full-length 12" LP version of "Macho Man" (5:14), and without skipping a beat, jumps right into the second cut on Side 1, "I Am What I Am" (5:38).

When both on Side 1 is listened to as the complete album medley, it doesn't all that much come across as clownish and sounds more in line with the label's output that year.  It pretty much captures the essence of Casablaca Records' free-for-all disco-party attitude, look and sound.

Even KISS had a disco hit or two on Casablanca the following year (and Peter Criss' final LP with the group).

A decent book on Casablanca Records:  And Party Every Day (Amazon link)
