VANITY 6 - VS. - APOLLONIA 6: THE FIRST TWO GIRL GROUPS FORMED/PRODUCED BY PRINCE - DOUBLE THE MINNEAPOLIS RATCHETNESS

Only a dirty mind like Prince would take off with his new fame after 1979 and broadened his Minneapolis-sound organization on the Warner Bros. label, beginning with his classic era band, The Time.  While forming his first girl group to co-write and mainly produce for on the side, only Prince could have originally thought up a name for the group suitable to his clan:  The Hookers.

But Denise Matthews AKA Vanity, Brenda Bennett and Susan Moonsie (Prince's high school GF) wasn't having it, and named the group instead Vanity 6.  The "6" allegedly meant the number of hooters amongst the group.  Good thing is wasn't something like Vanity 14!

After their Vanity 6 LP in 1982, Vanity left and signed on to Motown Records and acting, while Brenda and Susan continued with Apollonia, who co-starred with Prince in his film Purple Rain.  They became Apollonia 6 and originally had recorded "Manic Monday" to be their first single (I've heard a rough copy, they nailed it!), but at the last minute, Prince had given it instead for The Bangles to record - which became one of their biggest hits. So A6 was a little miffed over that.  After that 1984 Apollonia 6 album, they disbanded and both lead singers had released solo albums in the mid-late 80's.  Vanity nearly died from a crack overdose.  OK.
